Family Holidays in Term Time and authorised absence

It is a legal requirement for parents/carers to obtain the permission of the Headteacher before removing their child from school in order to take any leave in term time. Parents do not have an automatic right to take their children out of school for leave during term time and may be issued with a Penalty Notice if they do so without prior arrangement with the Headteacher. The legislation only allows the Headteacher to authorise such leave in exceptional circumstances.

To apply for a child to be granted leave from school parents should arrange a meeting with the headteacher and complete a leave of absence form located on the school website and return it to school for consideration well in advance of the proposed leave and before committing to any expense. Following a meeting and upon receipt of a request the Headteacher will make a decision as to whether the absence can be authorised, being mindful of government regulations and LA guidance.  Please do not arrange holidays without discussion with the school as this has caused significant problems for families who have ignored this ruling.

It remains the school decision to authorise any absence and parents should work with school to help us understand why a child is not in school.  If parents obstruct our statutory duty to make enquiries about attendance further action will need to be taken and absences may not be authorised.  The school must not authorise absences unless they are satisfied that the absence was unavoidable or matches.
